Here is a brief summary of the rules:
- On brevets (and permanents), each participant is considered to be on a "personal ride" and remains solely responsible for any crash in which he or she may be involved.
- Brevets are not competitive events, so no rider classifications are made. Results are published alphabetically, not by arrival time.
- Brevet routes must be followed as prescribed. Any rider leaving an event's route must re-enter the route from the same place they left it unless this is caused by unforeseen road closures by local authorities or dangerous conditions. Any participant observed taking a shortcut may be disqualified. (Note that, unlike brevets, when riding a permanent riders are allowed to take alternate routes, providing that they reach each control in order.)
- Brevets take place regardless of weather conditions, except in the case of a hurricane watch or hurricane warning.
- Approved helmets must be worn when riding and all state and local laws obeyed.
- Rides begin at the official start time (and the start control closes one hour later).
- Personal support vehicles are not permitted to follow a rider. Support may only be given at designated control locations.
- Riders are responsible for ensuring their control cards are validated as required. Lost cards may result in disqualification.
- In low-light conditions, riders must use appropriate front and rear lights, as well as reflective gear (vests and ankle bands). Please read RUSA's Guide to Reflective Gear.
- Any form of human-powered vehicle is acceptable. The only stipulation is that the vehicle must be powered solely by the rider.
- Brevet participants may not draft behind other riders, except for those also entered in the event.
- Lights, reflective gear, and bicycles must be submitted for inspection on request, at the discretion of the ride officials.
- Entrants under the age of 18 must be RUSA members and accompanied by a parent/legal guardian during the entire ride. The parent/legal guardian must sign a waiver for each minor participant. Should the parent/legal guardian be forced to abandon the ride, minors must stay with the parent, and vice versa.
- Inquiries, pleas, disagreements, or grievances should be submitted within 48 hours of the finish of an event.
